Zimbio: 'Vernon, Florida' (1981)
A documentary about a bunch of old people in a sleepy Florida town, and that's it? Boring, right? Well, nope! Director Errol Morris might be the greatest living documentary filmmaker and Vernon, FL was his second feature before The Thin Blue Line made him a legend in the late '80s. Simply, Vernon, Florida is an existential masterpiece. Quiet and unassuming in every way, Morris simply lets the people talk and somehow he gets gold. The turkey hunters can't imagine doing anything more spiritual. The town cop takes his cues from TV shows. The personalities are real and vivid and entirely entertaining.
